Mechanical packing (also known as compression packing, gland packing, braided packing, or stuffing box packing) is a traditional sealing method used to prevent fluid leakage around a rotating or reciprocating shaft in equipment like centrifugal pumps, valves, agitators, compressors, and marine propeller shafts.It consists of soft, flexible, rope-like or braided material (often in square or rectangular cross-section) that's cut into individual rings and "stuffed" or installed into a chamber called the stuffing box (or seal chamber) surrounding the shaft. A gland (adjustable follower or plate) compresses the packing rings axially, forcing them to expand radially against the shaft and the stuffing box walls.
